As part of the Public Safety Network Programme, Fire and Emergency NZ are looking to update our communications systems to ensure the Emergency Services sector has reliable, modern tools to help communities safe, protect property, uphold the law, and stay connected.
Reporting to the Business Change Manager, PSN, the Telecommunications Specialists are responsible for investigating and resolving system-wide fault conditions using a wide range of diagnostic tools and techniques and providing specialist support to our operational staff. You will contribute to technical leadership in IT telecommunications through the design, procurement, installation, upgrading, operation, control, maintenance and effective use of telecommunication services.
This is a fixed term or secondment position until 7 July 2027.

Bring your excellent experience and technical skill in modern telecommunications technology with a focus on paging and radio frequency management. You will have a continuous improvement and risk management mindset along with strong problem-solving skills. You will have excellent relationship building skills with the ability to engage with a wide range of stakeholders with varying levels of understanding. It would be an advantage to have an understanding of emergency management systems.
To be successful in this role, we'd expect you will:
- In depth experience with modern telecommunications technology and with supporting such technology
- A good understanding of radio frequency concepts and theory and its practical application
- A wide knowledge of communications hardware and its capabilities and role in a complex mobile communications environment
- Understands the land mobile environment and the connecting infrastructure Paging - POSAC and Flex, Mobile and Portable radio, VHF/UHF technology
Salary range $102,751 - $114,168 (pro rata), actual salary dependent on skills and experience.
