We’re looking for an Asset Engineer to join our Three Waters team — you’ll be passionate about smart planning and making a real difference in our community. The role reports to the Head of Activity Management & Risk and you’ll play a key role in shaping how we manage and invest in our water assets, from storage and treatment to distribution and disposal.

This role is all about making sure our three waters systems are safe, reliable, and built to last. You’ll be part of a team that applies strategic thinking and robust planning to ensure our water systems operate efficiently and reliably - not just for today, but for generations to come.

You’ll bring strong problem-solving skills, a practical mindset, and the ability to work collaboratively on projects that improve how we manage our water infrastructure.

Some key responsibilities but not limited to:

  • Having a technical understanding and delivering upon Council’s asset management policies and strategies.
  • Undertake asset and activity planning, follow standards and seek continuous improvement in activity management practices for Council’s water, wastewater and stormwater systems and infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with the wider Asset Planning Team to develop documented robust and justified renewal programmes which are consistent with corporate activity management policy.
  • Develop and maintain a rolling three-year programme of fully scoped renewal and capital improvement projects.
  • Follow programmes and processes in place to continuously improve the lifecycle management of water, wastewater and stormwater assets and to enable the refinement and optimization of renewal programmes.
  • Accurately capture asset attribute, performance and condition data in conjunction with the Three Waters Maintenance, Operations and Infrastructure Information Teams.
  • Collaborate with the wider Asset Planning Team to support the development of Activity Management Plans (AMP’s) for the water, wastewater and stormwater activities.

Qualifications

  • At minimum, have a tertiary qualification in Engineering or another relevant field.
  • Ideally you will have 2-3 years’ experience in an engineering or similar role.
  • Knowledge of infrastructure asset management will be an advantage.
  • Have a full New Zealand driver’s licence.
  • Have a passion for waters infrastructure management, maintenance, or operations, ideally you will have some experience in this, or a similar environment.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders (internal and external).
  • Experience working in local government (preferred, but not essential).
  • High level of computer literacy, particularly in Microsoft Office applications such as Excel and Power BI.
  • Flexibility, initiative, quick responder with an ability to remain calm under pressure and when situations change.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly communicate technical and standards information in a clear manner.
  • Demonstrated management and organisational skills and capacity to deliver high quality outcomes within agreed timeframes.
  • Ability to analyse complex problems and identify solutions for their resolution.
  • Ability to operate independently, anticipate requirements and monitor workloads.
  • Have the ability to formulate, implement and deliver objectives and plans.
  • Ideally have a basic understanding of and some experience in developing financial plans and operational budgets.
  • Basic experience in scoping, feasibility and detailed design projects.
  • Basic to good proficiency in understanding design documentation and drawings.
  • The ability to manage workloads and work under tight time pressures.
  • The ability to partner with consultants an other parts of the business and teams to ensure asset management, deployment, operation, maintenance or disposal is achieved efficiently and effectively.
