Job Description
As our Assistant Accountant, you’ll play a vital role in the heart of NPDL’s Central Accounting team. Working closely with our TransAm New Zealand Accountant – Finance, you’ll help drive our month-end close and consolidation process to meet our 5-day deadline for submission to our US parent company. What you will be doing:
- Playing a key role in streamlining and enhancing financial processes to deliver exceptional service across the business
- Collaborating with departments to support the development of insightful and tailored financial reporting
- Taking ownership of core financial operations – including accounts payable, receivable, GL reconciliations, and statutory tax returns – aligned with our Finance team’s strategic goals
- Supporting ongoing improvements in financial systems and transactions to boost efficiency and accuracy
- Helping ensure our financial policies and procedures remain robust, scalable, and aligned with business needs
- Driving timely and accurate month-end and year-end closes, working alongside a high-performing finance team
- Assisting in preparing clear, concise, and meaningful financial reports to support decision-making
- Contributing to a smooth audit process by helping prepare documentation and meeting compliance needs
- Championing cross-functional collaboration by building strong relationships and engagement across departments
- Ensuring all financial transactions are processed accurately, efficiently, and in line with internal controls and risk management frameworks
- Supporting key finance portfolios including payables, receivables, cash management, and fixed assets
- Preparing monthly management accounts with insightful analysis and commentary on performance
- Assisting in producing and reviewing year-end financial statements with a sharp eye for detail
- Working closely with external auditors to deliver successful year-end audits
- Managing GST, FBT, and RWT returns to ensure full compliance with statutory requirements
- Maintaining and monitoring the fixed asset register for accuracy and completeness
- Proactively reviewing and improving processes, ensuring compliance and best practice are embedded at all times
Qualifications
Here’s what you’ll bring to the table:
- A tertiary qualification in Accounting (or a related field) and a solid foundation in financial principles
- Advanced Excel skills – you're confident with formulas, pivot tables, and turning data into insights
- 3+ years of hands-on experience in accounting – you know your way around ledgers, reconciliations, and reporting
- A natural multitasker who thrives under pressure and knows how to prioritise like a pro
- Excellent communication and organisational skills – you're reliable, responsive, and always one step ahead
- A team player who also shines when working independently
- Strong financial acumen and a sharp analytical mindset
- A proactive, solutions-focused attitude with a knack for problem-solving
- Comfortable engaging with stakeholders at all levels – from colleagues to senior leadership
- Detail-driven, results-oriented, and motivated to deliver your best every time
This is a full-time permanent role based in our Parnell office. You will have the right to live and work in New Zealand or Australia at the time of applying. The successful candidate may be subject to undergo a Police Check and/or Pre-Employment Drug Test.
