Otago is famous for its residential college communities supporting thousands of mostly first-year students as they begin their tertiary journey at the University of Otago. Studholme College is a 183-bed college that has been providing accommodation for students since 1915. The Tautiaki-Kaiāwhina plays a central role in sharing the Studholme manaakitanga to everyone. Our main aim is to foster a strong sense of whanaungatanga as an essential foundation for learning and personal growth of Studholme tauira.
The role / Te mahi
Tautiaki-Kaiāwhina (Assistant Wardens) are key members of the College pastoral and welfare team. With a focus on wellbeing / oraka, they provide culturally appropriate opportunities for residents to experience cultural, sporting, academic and personal development in a positive college environment.
Skills and experience / Kā pūkeka me kā wheako
We are looking for a future leader who is resilient and capable of handling (sometimes) difficult and complex situations.
- Experience working with young adults in a leadership capacity.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in emergency or crisis situations.
- Experience in engaging students and managing a variety of safe and fun student focused events and activities.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to achieve a range of tasks under competing demands, within agreed timeframes.
- Experience in the tertiary sector would be a distinct advantage.
This exciting role will suit people from varied backgrounds who are passionate about working with young adults. Candidates with knowledge and appreciation of cultural issues and knowledge of Tikanga Māori and / or knowledge in providing positive opportunities for Tauira Māori, will be especially welcome.

This is a permanent, full-time (37.5 hours per week), live out position, located in Ōtepoti, Dunedin.
The appointment range for this role is $69,931 to $74,609. Top of range $80,285.
You must have the right to live and work in New Zealand to apply for this role.
Due to the nature of the role, required hours of work are rostered across evenings and weekends.
From time to time, you may be deployed to different colleges to suit the needs of the Division. This may include leave coverage, conference support, assistance with summer business such as Hands on Otago, Summer School, etc.
