Building Control Officers impact people’s well-being and quality of life. They assist Council in meeting its statutory obligations and policies in matters relating to the Building Act, as well as Building Regulations, and Building Consent Authority Accreditation Regulations. This role is crucial in ensuring the safety and integrity of buildings, making it a vital part of the construction and regulatory landscape of Marlborough.
Working in our team you will be able to carry out the full range of duties required of a Building Control Officer. The activities will include both processing building consent applications and undertaking inspections out in the field or remotely/virtually. All duties are rotated on a roster system and will provide you with the opportunity to undertake inspections using 4-wheel drive vehicles, water taxis, even fixed wings and helicopter travel to inspections. These inspections are conducted in town and in remote locations such as in our majestic mountains and various islands in the Marlborough Sounds..

We are looking for someone that has:
- Exceptional interpersonal and decision-making skills: Your ability to connect with others and make sound decisions will be key to your success in this role.
- Relevant qualifications and experience: Your qualification in Regulation 18 of Building (Accreditation of Building Consent Authorities) Regulations 2006 and your background in building control will be highly valued.
- Advanced knowledge of the Building Act 2004 and NZ Building Code(s): Your deep understanding of these regulations will ensure our projects meet the highest standards.
- High emotional intelligence and empathy: Your ability to understand and respect different viewpoints will help you build strong relationships with colleagues and community.
- Strong time management skills: You excel at meeting deadlines and focusing on solutions, not problems.
- Digital literacy and adaptability: You are comfortable with technology and eager to learn new software in our ever-evolving environment.
Preference will be given to applicants who currently hold, or who are working towards, qualifications in the following technical fields (or similar) that complies with Reg 18 of Building (Accreditation of Building Consent Authorities) Regulations 2006.
- Building Control Surveying
- Building Surveying or Quantity Surveying
- Construction Management
- Architectural Studies
- Building Science
- Engineering
If you currently work in Building Regulatory Environment (Building Consent Authority or Territorial Authority) and hold a current Competency for Building Consent Processing or Inspections, we'd particularly like to hear from you.
