Here at the Southern DHB the highest possible levels of patient care and service lie at the heart of our mission. Integral to this is a commitment to creating a high-performing organisation with a focus on quality.

About the team

The intellectual disability service (IDS) is part of the specialist mental health services based at Wakari Hospital, high above Dunedin with stunning views of the city and ocean. The IDS comprises three parts: Ward 10a - a twelve-bed inpatient service, Helensburgh Cottage - a four-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit, and the community liaison team. You will work alongside the multidisciplinary team comprising registered nurses, enrolled nurses, mental health assistants, occupational therapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists.

About the role

Our intellectual disability service based at Wakari Hospital is looking for a clinical psychologist to join the community liaison team. The community liaison team is a pivotal role in the support and rehabilitation of care recipients both in the inpatient ward and in the community.

You will require good time management skills to enable your assessment, planning, and delivery of effective clinical psychology interventions for patients. You will also be actively involved in individual and group therapies. Ensuring the continued wellbeing of your clients will see you liaising extensively with other clinical psychologists within the organisation.

You will have a sound knowledge of clinical psychology assessment and interventions, with relevance to intellectual disability as well as mental health. Your communication skills will be of the highest standard, allowing you to relate to the clients, their families, and other health professionals while providing clear, appropriate communication when presenting and discussing clinical information. You should also be open to different ways of working and thinking outside the box in order to achieve positive outcomes. The clinical psychologist role is an integral and valued member of a multidisciplinary team providing patient-centred interventions.
