About us
The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) is the heart of Aotearoa New Zealand's cyber defence. We fulfil the cyber security responsibilities of the Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB) | Te Tira Tiaki, and provide cyber security services to all New Zealanders - from individuals and small businesses and organisations up to large enterprises, government, and critical national infrastructure.
The role
As Cyber Network Defence (CND) Analysts, we defend Aotearoa New Zealand from the most serious and sophisticated cyber-attacks, as our foreign adversaries are often well resourced, highly skilled and good at concealment. We constantly need to be aware of who the real adversary might be, what their objectives and targets are, and how best to uncover their trail to defeat them.
You will be joining a collaborative, high-performing and passionate team of cyber security professionals, striving to understand and counter sophisticated cyber-borne threats against Aotearoa New Zealand's information infrastructures of significance.
Key responsibilities:
- Maintain a comprehensive understanding of the cyber threat environment, including the tactics, techniques and procedures of malicious cyber actors
- Contribute to the detection and understanding of advanced malicious cyber activity
- Contribute to the discovery and analysis of new or emerging cyber threats
- Document and report on advanced malicious cyber activity to share with colleagues and enable advice to impacted NZ victims computer network exploitation events

Who we're looking for
First and foremost, we are seeking candidates that are knowledgeable and passionate about cyber security with a strong desire to contribute to our mission to protect Aotearoa New Zealand.
We are looking for a team player who is self-motivated, adaptable and can demonstrate sound judgement.
You will ideally bring:
- Experience in IT security or network defence or penetration testing
- Knowledge of common network defence and attack tools and techniques
- Excellent knowledge of network protocols or host internals
- Programming/scripting experience
- A willingness to try new things, be innovative and push boundaries of traditional CND techniques
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Level 2 CND Analysts are expected to be an expert in computer and network security and to specialise in at least one area of network defence
- Level 3 CND Analysts are expected to be an expert in computer and network security and a specialist in multiple areas of network defence. It is also expected they have experience with NZIC systems, tools and data

Level 1 - $87,048 - $92,851
Level 2 - $103,009 - $109,876
Level 3 - $120,358 - $128,383
Before you apply
Working within our unique environment means we have to ensure you're eligible for employment.
You must:
- Have been a New Zealand Citizen for at least 10 years
OR
Hold a current NZ Residency Class Visa and ideally have been a citizen of the UK, USA, Canada or Australia for at least 10 years
- Be eligible to obtain a Top Secret Special (TSS) security clearance
- Ordinarily, this means you'll have a 15 year checkable background in countries NZSIS Vetting can make meaningful and reliable checks.
