He angitūtanga: The opportunity
Auckland Council’s Environmental Evaluation and Monitoring Unit has an opportunity for an Environmental Specialist to join the Water Quality team. This is a critical role for the Council and will focus on the delivery of long-term water quality and freshwater ecology monitoring programmes.
You will be in the field approximately three days per week collecting high quality data to improve our understanding of the water quality in our lakes, rivers and streams, coastal areas and groundwater aquifers. During the summer period you will also assist with the delivery of our freshwater ecology monitoring programme (e.g. fish, macro-invertebrates and stream ecological valuations).
In this role you will be expected to:
- take all reasonable and practicable steps to ensure your own health, safety, and wellbeing, as well as that of those around you while at work
- work as a team and support other kaimahi across the unit responsible for field operations and data collection
- ensure that data collection is undertaken in accordance with national standards and programme specific monitoring protocols
- undertake quality assurance and data management
- build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders

Having a passion for the outdoors and upholding an excellent health and safety attitude are critical for this role.
- We will be looking for specific experience with the key role requirements:
- demonstrated field experience in environmental monitoring, preferably water quality monitoring
- a practical understanding of environmental data collection methodologies, quality control and assurance systems
- the ability to work both independently and as part of a team with effective communication, attention to detail and excellent record-keeping
current NZ full driver’s license
Having experience in working with continuous water quality monitoring sensors and continuous data processing is desirable.
