Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is dedicated to serving all New Zealanders. Through integration and collaboration, we're building a health system underpinned by partnership, equity, sustainability, whānau-centred care, and excellence.

About the role

We are pleased to offer a one-year fellowship position in Dunedin Hospital/University of Otago to gastroenterology trainees interested in the areas of IBD and Endoscopy. The Fellow in this program will work closely with the team of five Consultant Physicians, Registrar, Clinical Nurse Specialists and a Nurse Practitioner to ensure an efficient and high-quality service.

Dunedin Hospital is the only tertiary level hospital in the lower South Island and can offer you a varied and challenging array of all aspects in Gastroenterology. We have over 1000 patients with IBD under our care and provide over 5000 endoscopic procedures. Our Gastroenterology Research Unit, affiliated with the University of Otago, allows research into various aspects of IBD, from fundamental research into bacterial host interactions using state of the human art organoid models to digital health applications for monitoring the wellbeing of our patients.

Fellows should be mostly proficient in upper and lower diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopies.

The successful candidate will participate in all aspects of our in and outpatient IBD specialist service, including:

  • two IBD clinics per week
  • ward rounds
  • rural clinics
  • participate in the IBD medical/surgical MDMs
  • four endoscopy lists per week
  • research
  • 1:6 gastroenterology on-call under supervision as needed.

They will also be expected to conduct in house research, preferably using the CCCare database, investigator-led studies and commercial clinical trials.

Supervision, both direct and indirect, will be provided by other SMOs including a consultant available for advice at all times. This is an excellent opportunity to hone specialist skills before becoming fully vocationally registered. It is intended to aid the transition from registrar working under supervision to specialist providing supervision to junior staff.

We are looking for someone with the following skills and experience to complement our team:

  • A team player with exceptional interpersonal skills who builds effective relationships both within and external to their team
  • Is solution focused and can demonstrate excellent decision making and priority setting in a clinical environment
  • Enthusiasm for teaching and passing on their knowledge to junior members of staff and University students
  • Supervision of more junior medical staff within the unit, education of junior staff in clinical management and procedural techniques (where the Fellow is appropriately skilled)

About you

You will need to be at least in your last six months of gastroenterology advanced training.
