Our Apparel Buying team plays a pivotal role in shaping the direction of our ranges. They make the affordable desirable by delivering products that are not only commercial and fit-for-purpose but that also speak to the diverse lifestyles of our customers.
We are now searching for a General Manager Buyer – Apparel: a visionary and commercially sharp leader who understands what great sourcing looks like, can navigate complexity with ease, and is passionate about delivering outcomes that have both customer and business impact.
Job Description
Based at our Auckland Support Office and reporting into the Executive General Manager – Merchandise, you will take ownership of the end-to-end apparel buying function. With around 8 weeks of travel per year required, you’ll stay connected to global markets, supplier networks, and emerging trends.
This is a hugely commercial and strategic role – one where you’ll set the vision for apparel, manage the P&L, and lead a highly talented team to deliver ranges that excite our customers and strengthen our market position. Your leadership will be instrumental in evolving how we design, source, and buy apparel, ensuring we remain relevant, competitive, and future-focused.
Key responsibilities include:
- Strategic leadership – setting and executing the buying and sourcing strategy across all apparel categories.
- P&L accountability – driving positive commercial outcomes through margin optimisation, sourcing efficiencies, and strong supplier partnerships.
- Team development – coaching, mentoring, and inspiring your team to grow capability and deliver at their best.
- Range direction – working with Buyers and Planners to shape head-to-toe apparel ranges that balance trend, function, and value.
- Stakeholder influence – building strong relationships across the business and with suppliers, bringing people on the journey with you.
- Innovation & improvement – leading high-priority projects that drive business improvement and customer impact.
- Customer focus: ensuring a customer-first mindset is embedded in all buying and sourcing decisions, driving ranges and experiences that truly resonate with New Zealanders.
- Executive & Board engagement – preparing and presenting insightful reports, updates, and recommendations to the Executive team and Board, influencing strategic decisions at the highest level.
Qualifications
We are looking for a senior retail leader with proven expertise in apparel buying, combined with in-depth leadership experience at a senior level. You are commercially astute, resilient, and decisive – thriving in fast-paced environments where you balance creativity with commercial discipline.
You will also bring:
- Extensive retail and buying leadership experience at senior management level.
- Strong commercial acumen with a proven track record of driving profitable outcomes.
- In-depth knowledge of the apparel market, including offshore sourcing, production, and supplier management.
- A customer-first mindset and a passion for delivering ranges that resonate with diverse customer needs.
- Proven leadership skills – the ability to inspire, empower, and develop teams.
- Strong stakeholder management, communication, and influencing skills at all levels.
- Resilience, drive, and the confidence to think differently and bring fresh perspectives.
- Ideally, experience within outdoor retail or lifestyle apparel.
