About the role
Connetics services the electricity network across the full asset lifecycle, from design to maintenance, with our Designers involved at every stage. Known for innovative design solutions, we have a strong pipeline of projects and are looking for a Principal Design Engineer to join our journey.
As a senior member of the Design & Engineering Team, you'll use your technical expertise and industry experience to grow our customer base, drive innovation, and mentor others. Working in our fast-paced Overhead Design discipline, you'll deliver high-value projects from concept to commissioning—designing from scratch, adapting proven solutions, and exceeding customer expectations.
Specifically, you'll be providing Overhead Line design solutions for our customers, delivering a focus on design quality and inherent safety by:
- Developing Overhead line design solutions in the Distribution and Sub-transmission specialisation for both renewal and new construction projects
- Detailing designs in accordance with AS/NZS 7000 and requirements of local EDB's
- Delivering high quality CAD detailed design drawing sets in collaboration with dedicated draughting resources when needed
- Producing design reports, equipment specifications and installation specifications
- Undertaking research on innovative design solutions to overcome unique site or client-based requirements
- Demonstrating subject matter expertise internally and externally (peer review, publications, presentations)
- Managing large or complex projects with multiple resources, delivering on time and in budget
- Undertaking business development, estimating and scoping new work
- Ensuring projects meet safety regulations and relevant standards, in addition to regularly undertaking Safety in Design Reviews
- Providing instruction, advice, and training to junior colleagues in a supportive and collaborative way
Skills /Experience
Essential:
- Level 7 engineering qualification or equivalent experience
- Experience in a similar role
- Extensive knowledge of Overhead line design
- Comprehensive understanding of standards and New Zealand best practice
- Evidence of delivering successful projects on time and in budget
- Experience in using Overhead design software, (Neara or CATAN)
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
- A current and valid Driver's Licence
- Eligible to work in NZ
Desirable:
- Advanced user of Neara
- Skills and/or familiarity in CAD software such as AutoCAD and Inventor
- Current professional registration with a widely recognized industry body such as Engineering NZ
- Experience within any New Zealand Electricity Distribution Business
