Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity   

We’re looking for a Principal Engineer – Surfacing to join our Pavement Engineering team. This role provides expert technical guidance on surfacing treatments across New Zealand’s transport system. You’ll collaborate with designers, system managers, and industry stakeholders to deliver fit-for-purpose outcomes and help shape national standards and guidelines. Responsibilities include:

• Leading the development of surfacing standards for capital projects and maintenance.
• Engaging proactively with internal practice groups and external industry representatives.
• Managing research and development initiatives to advance surfacing treatments and construction processes.
• Conducting technical reviews of surfacing elements in design reports.
• Implementing quality assurance processes to ensure high standards.
• Support organisational transformation and continuous improvement.

We are seeking to appoint at a salary between $131,659 - $146.288 commensurate to skills and experience.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

• In-depth knowledge of pavement surfacing and delineation relevant to New Zealand’s transport standards.
• Extensive experience in surfacing design, treatments, and construction processes.
• Proven ability to lead research projects and influence best practice outcomes.
• Strong stakeholder engagement and credibility across diverse groups.

You will demonstrate knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an understanding of Te Ao Māori and promote tikanga and Te Reo Māori. You will also have knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an appreciation of Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) as it applies in the public service.
