We are looking for a Scientist – Terrestrial Ecology to join our Environmental Science Team. This a full-time fixed term opportunity (up to 12 months) to cover parental leave.
In this role, you’ll contribute technical expertise and ecological insight to research and monitoring programmes that support the Environmental Science section’s work, aligning with the priorities and objectives outlined in HBRC’s plans. Working within the science and environmental information teams, and collaboratively across Council, you’ll deliver information on the region’s terrestrial ecosystems. This involves applying knowledge across multiple ecological disciplines, including botany, ornithology, herpetology, and wetland ecology, while drawing on a good understanding of ecological principles and field ecology monitoring techniques.

You’ll be an enthusiastic team player with an enquiring mind who has excellent interpersonal skills to initiate and engage confidently at all levels. With a high level of organisational and administrative ability, you’ll thrive in dynamic environments and confidently manage multitasking across several projects. Bringing with you a recognised postgraduate qualification in environmental science, with a strong focus on ecology and biodiversity, is essential, alongside experience in a similar role or relevant industry. Demonstrated experience in freshwater wetland monitoring, wetland delineation and an understanding of monitoring ecosystem health in terrestrial environments, will be a key part of your success in this position.
You will also have:
- A valid driver’s licence
- Experience in environmental resource management and monitoring with an emphasis on anthropogenic and climate related influences on terrestrial systems
- Good knowledge of terrestrial ecosystems, key stressors, and monitoring techniques to assess ecological health and change
What we offer | Nga huanga mōu:
The salary range for this role is between $94,690 to 114,631 and will depend on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.
