At KiwiRail, we connect people and freight across Aotearoa, helping build a stronger and more sustainable New Zealand. Our work keeps communities connected, businesses moving, and the country growing. We are proud of the role we play and the teamwork that makes it possible.

He whakamārama mō te tūranga mahi | About the role

As a Trainee Signals Technician, you will learn to maintain and repair the critical signalling systems that keep our rail network safe and reliable. Working alongside experienced technicians, you’ll gain hands-on experience in installing, testing, and restoring signal equipment. Safety is at the heart of everything we do, and you’ll be supported with training to build your technical skills and confidence.

This is a practical role where no two days are the same. You may be based at your local depot with some travel and overnight stays required.

We welcome receiving applications from candidates who have basic trade skills, are keen to learn, enjoy practical work, and can work well in a team. You’ll bring:

  • Electrical practicing licence is preferable

  • NCEA Level 1 in Maths, English, and Science (or equivalent)

  • A full Class 1 driver’s licence

  • Good communication skills and a team-focused attitude

  • Commitment to safety – for yourself and those around you

  • Physical fitness for hands-on, outdoor work

It would also be great if you have:

  • Previous experience in manual or technical work

  • A current First Aid/CPR certificate

  • Electrical registration or related training

Nōu te rourou | What’s in it for you

At KiwiRail, your development matters. As a trainee, you’ll receive structured on-the-job training, mentoring, and access to industry-recognised courses. You’ll be supported to complete Signals Course I and II, as well as earn key operating certificates.

We offer:

  • A competitive salary and benefits package

  • Full training and career progression pathways

  • The chance to gain specialist rail industry qualifications

  • Work that makes a real difference for New Zealand

If you’re ready to grow your skills and contribute to a safer, more connected rail network, we’d love to hear from you. Apply now and be part of a team keeping New Zealand on track.

All successful candidates must pass a pre-employment medical and drug test. Applicants must have New Zealand residency or citizenship.

All aboard for a rewarding career with KiwiRail!
