About the Role
We are seeking a Specialist Anaesthetist to join the Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Management at Bay of Plenty – Hauora a Toi. This full-time, permanent position is primarily based at Whakatāne Hospital, with a commitment to supporting services across the region – including Tauranga Hospital when necessary.
In this role, you will contribute to a full spectrum of anaesthesia service delivery including care for all age groups, acute and after-hours services, obstetric anaesthesia, and pain management. You will be joining a department that is actively growing and committed to delivering high-quality, equitable care for a diverse population of over 276,000 people across the Bay of Plenty.

About you
To be successful in the role we are looking for an experienced and adaptable Anaesthetist with a collaborative mindset and a patient-first approach. You are looking to working in a team that values connection, service development, and the opportunity to make a difference across a growing region. Presenting strong clinical skills across the breadth of anaesthesia, and equally comfortable supporting acute care, obstetrics, and perioperative planning.
What you will bring:
- Fellowship and qualifications suitable for vocational registration in Anaesthesia with the Medical Council of New Zealand
- Eligibility for vocational registration (if not currently registered)
- Experience delivering anaesthetic care across a range of specialties, including obstetrics and acute/emergency care
- Strong communication and teamwork within a multidisciplinary environment
- A flexible and collaborative approach to supporting services across a wider district
- Commitment to equity, cultural safety, and high-quality care
