About the Role | Korero mo te turanga

We are looking for two exceptional Tier 3 leaders to drive strategic direction and impact across critical portfolios of Budget and Fiscal Strategy and Economic Performance.

In these pivotal positions, you'll provide strategic leadership at the heart of Treasury, ensuring our advice is impactful, credible, and aligned with organisational priorities, to make a lasting impact for New Zealanders.

These Assistant Secretaries work collectively with their Tier 3 leadership colleagues to drive organisational change initiatives that bolster the Treasury's capability, performance, and productivity. You'll build high-performing, engaged, and flexible teams and talent pipelines that deliver innovative, fit-for-purpose advice. As a trusted advisor, you'll work with Ministers and senior leaders across sectors to tackle New Zealand's most complex and interconnected policy challenges.

You'll lead one of two pivotal portfolios, each focused on a core area of impact:

1. Assistant Secretary - Budget and Fiscal Strategy

You'll ensure the delivery of high-quality advice on macroeconomic management and fiscal choices and deliver a robust Budget process. Your area will produce timely economic and fiscal projections, and offers critical analysis to guide Crown investment, asset management, and financial decision-making.

2. Assistant Secretary - Economic Performance

You'll champion microeconomic structural reforms to enhance New Zealand's productivity and economic growth. By delivering strategic advice on taxation, natural resources, regional , financial markets and innovation, you'll help shape the settings that drive a thriving, inclusive economy.

About You | O pumanawa

We're looking for exceptional senior leaders to drive results in a complex, fast-paced environment. You'll have:

  • Proven strategic leadership experience, with the ability to drive system-wide change, challenge the status quo, and deliver on organisational priorities.
  • Excellent leadership in managing people, performance, and organisational resources to foster a high-performing, values-driven workplace.
  • Exceptional stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence Ministers, senior leaders, and external partners.
  • Agility in navigating complex political environments and ambiguity under pressure, maintaining strategic focus and achieving results.
  • Deep policy expertise, including translating complex data into innovative, practical solutions that address New Zealand's economic and geopolitical challenges.

For Budget and Fiscal Strategy, having a broad knowledge of fiscal or macroeconomic policy frameworks is preferrable. For Economic Performance, strong experience in microeconomic policy is key.
