About the Roles

We currently have an opening in our team for Registered Nurses with a passion for Mental Health nursing. Hours of work within WASSS would be working a 4-on/4-off rotating 12-hour roster that provides 24-hour coverage based in Whangārei. You will provide a single point of entry service for acute referrals to the services, as well as dedicated phone line support.

Additional duties include conducting preliminary assessments of whether a person is likely to have a mental illness or disorder, and the nature of urgency of the response required against the ratified Triage scale. We aim to reduce wait times and provide the best experience we can for whānau under our care.

With Raranga Tahi you will be working in a collaborative model with a non-government organisation, you will be working alongside Taura-here who provide the cultural lens of the team. The hours of work are Wednesday to Saturday 10am – 10 pm. You will provide community based acute support to facilitate early discharge from Tumanako (inpatient unit) and acute support to circumvent admission.

Whangārei Acute Spectrum Specialist Services (WASSS) and Raranga Tahi are a group of community-based teams that provide acute specialist assessment and treatment for new and existing clients within Health New Zealand Te Tai Tokerau Mental Health and Addictions service. We are a close whānau that works collaboratively and genuinely care about each other. Our sense of belonging is enhances with a lot of laughter and humour and we are committed to ongoing professional and cultural development.

About you

Essential requirements:

  • NZ registered nurse with a current practicing certificate
  • Two years’ experience in acute and/or Kaupapa-led community mental health practice working with tāngata whaiora and their whānau living with the effects of mental illness in our community
  • Be a Duly Authorised Officer or be willing to work towards the same
  • Proven ability to communicate well with tāngata whaiora, their whānau and colleagues, and engage Māori in making choices that enhance their wellbeing
  • A current, full NZ drivers’ licence
