About the Role

Kai Manaaki-Cultural Support Worker is part of the unregulated health workforce and therefore must always work under direction and/or delegation of a clinician on the unit they are based on. The Kai Manaaki-Cultural Support Worker role is task-specific and has defined boundaries.

Kai Manaaki -Cultural Support Worker is part of a collaborative health care team; they assist the clinicians to meet the Tāngata whai ora / consumer needs when it is appropriate for team leader to delegate aspects of care to a trained unregulated health Kai Manaaki role. Kaimanaaki-Cultural Support Worker contributes to the successful operation of the clinical team at Tāwhirimātea.

Kaimanaaki-Cultural Support Worker must seek guidance and supervision when needed. Kaimanaaki-Cultural Support Worker may also be allocated service activities or duties that contribute to the service function and delivery.

Kai Manaaki-Cultural Support Worker working hours are based on the unit at Tāwhirimātea, Monday to Friday, 0800 hours - 1630 hours.

Specific training as defined by MHAIDS learning and development will be provided to ensure the Kai Manaaki-Cultural Support Worker has appropriate cultural competencies and skills according to the employer and service expectations.

Kai Manaaki-Cultural Support Worker gives and receives feedback on their performance in an annual performance review with their line manager. For cultural expertise performance review process please refer to the Te Whatu Ora Allied, Public Health, Scientific & Technical Collective Agreement Appendix A and Appendix G.

About the Team/Service Location

Tāwhirimātea is 29 bed safe care facility rehabilitation unit within Central Regional Forensic and Rehabilitation Services based on Te Korowai Whāriki Campus in Porirua. This is a regional innovative supportive service working with tangata whai ora in supporting their journey with a multi-disciplinary team approach. We advocate for best practice, sharing of ideas, and the continuum of change management processes to align with our vision.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • An interest in working with mental health Tāngata whai ora.
  • Knowledge and skills in tikanga Māori.
  • Ability to work under guidance and according to treatment plans and guidelines developed.
  • Ability to make an effective unit / team contribution.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both written and oral.
  • Ability to adapt within a changing environment.
  • Sensitive to the needs of Tāngata whai ora, whānau, staff and the public.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Understanding of the needs of clinical cultures.
  • Strong consumer focus.
  • Understanding of and adherence to C&C - s aims and objectives.
  • At least NZQA level 3 or higher certificate or equivalent qualification.
  • Clean and current Full Class 1 New Zealand Drivers licence.
