Worker Type:
PermanentHere at BNZ, it's about more than just banking. We work together in an agile, energising environment to create innovative solutions through our promise "If you can imagine a better future, let's find a way."
We support wellbeing, flexible working and have a generous leave offering. There is the opportunity for growth, learning and career development. No two days are the same.
Ko mātou tēnei | This is Us
BNZ’s in-house Design team is on the lookout for an experienced Design Lead to join our talented crew. We’re a diverse bunch, united by a common goal: improving the financial wellbeing of all New Zealanders. It’s ambitious work, and there’s a lot of it, so we need your help.
Mō te Tūranga | About the Role
We sat down with our UX Design Director, and he let us know the following about the role:
What are some key responsibilities the person in this role will complete?
Design end-to-end digital experiences, from early concepts and customer journeys through to high-fidelity designs and polished UI
Solve complex problems by turning business and customer needs into clear, elegant, usable solutions
Contribute to and evolve our Design System, help create scalable, accessible components and patterns that other designers love to use
Collaborate closely with product managers, engineers, researchers, and content designers to bring ideas to life (and make them better along the way)
Use research and data to inform your decisions, and advocate for the customer at every stage
Prototype and test ideas early and often, learning what works (and what doesn’t) before it’s built
Give and receive thoughtful critique, we’re all here to help each other grow
Champion design thinking and quality craft across the team and BNZ
Balance speed and quality. Know when to push for perfection, and when “great” is good enough to ship
What is the team culture and environment like?
We are passionate about what we do and have a focus on making the most of the diverse talents and experiences of team members. We're busy, we enjoy being in the middle of things and we love that our work makes a difference to our colleagues and customers. We probably drink too much coffee, eat too much dark chocolate, and spend too long staring out at the harbour wondering if there was a more efficient way or laying out the city.
What is the most exciting thing about this opportunity?
You get to work with a bunch of smart people who are chasing the same goals as you. We won't rest until we've delivered worldclass outcomes for our customers. And even then, we'll only take a short rest as there is always more to do.
What attributes will this person display in order to be successful in this role?
You should definitely:
Have designed and shipped digital products that solve real, thorny problems
Love turning complexity into clarity (bonus points if you enjoy the messy middle)
Have a strong portfolio that shows more than just pretty screens
Think in patterns, not just pages, and have a thing for Design Systems
Collaborate well with others and give/receive feedback like a pro
Care about craft, consistency, and the people using your designs
What is your favourite thing about working for BNZ?
6 weeks of annual leave (yes, six!)
Hybrid working, you can work a couple of days at home, but once you’ve seen our offices you may never make use of this allowance!
Generous staff banking and insurance perks
A design culture that values quality, impact, and good humans
Projects that are meaningful, challenging, and occasionally gnarly (in the best way)
Did we mention 6 weeks leave!
And seriously our offices are mint.
If you’re looking for a place where you can do the best work of your career with smart people, on real problems, for a brand that truly cares, we’d love to hear from you.
Nau Mai ki te Pēke o Aotearoa | Come to the Bank of New Zealand
