Fellowship Opportunities in Anaesthesia – Auckland, New Zealand

Expressions of interest invited for fixed-term roles starting in February and August

2026.

We are a leading tertiary teaching hospital situated in the beautiful harbour city of Auckland.

As one of Australasia’s busiest acute surgical centres, we operate 24 theatres across two campuses. With 10 ANZCA-accredited fellowship positions available annually, our department offers exceptional opportunities for professional development as you transition to independent consultant (attending) practice.

The Fellowship Experience

Our anaesthesia fellowships offer a comprehensive and varied clinical experience across a wide range of surgical subspecialties providing a solid “generalist” experience. Our fellows can also choose to focus their training in one of the following areas:

  • Obstetric Anaesthesia
  • Burns and reconstructive surgery
  • Perioperative Medicine
  • Regional Anaesthesia

Our roles are ideally suited for those in their final year of training (or ST6/7), early consultant career (FANZCA, post-CCT), or equivalent. The fellow experience covers acute surgical theatre work, managing independent elective lists, and contributing to out-of[1]theatre clinical responsibilities—providing a well-rounded, generalist anaesthetic foundation.

About the Department

We are a metropolitan tertiary referral centre for complex cases, including acute spinal injury, pelvic trauma, mangled limb, maxillofacial trauma, and major plastic reconstructive surgeries. We are also home to the National Burns Centre, delivering world-class burns care to patients from across New Zealand and the Pacific.

Our department supports a busy Obstetric Unit with over 7,000 deliveries annually, many of which involve high-risk cases. We are a large department that is proud of our collegial and supportive team culture, and can offer additional learning opportunities in paediatric care, advanced airway management including for bronchoscopy, transthoracic echo, POCUS and acute pain management.

Candidate Requirements

We welcome applications from candidates who meet the following criteria:

  • Eligible to enter the Provisional Fellow Year (PFY) or first year post-FANZCA (ANZCA)
  • ST6/ST7 at commencement, or post-CCT (UK), or equivalent.
  • International applicants are warmly encouraged to apply, provided they meet eligibility for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ).
  • Eligibility self-assessment tool can be found at https://www.mcnz.org.nz/registration/getting-registered/tool/
