Providing both pastoral care and learning support as an Academic Mentor, we are looking for dynamic and passionate individuals to join our Te Ara Oranga team. Manukau Institute of Technology has a part time 6 months fixed term till Dec 2025 opportunity to work with the Te Ara Oranga Project, supporting our students learning journey into the health workforce.

We are seeking an experienced and culturally sensitive individual to join our team as the Te Ara Oranga Health Workforce Academic Mentor. You will act as an academic mentor for Māori and Pasifika students registering with Te Ara Oranga from the Schools of Nursing, Health and Counselling and Social Work. You will be flexible and solution focused providing academic guidance and culturally appropriate pastoral support throughout their tertiary journey and into the health workforce.

As the successful candidate, your accountabilities will include creating and fostering a culturally safe learning environment by providing academic guidance and support to students, including career advice, mentoring, resilience strategies, and developing leadership skills. You will actively engage with students on an ongoing basis to identify specific learning needs and cultural well-being, in relation to their tertiary learning journey.

Key duties this role will be responsible for:

  • Provide academic guidance and support to students, aiding the achievement of successful learning outcomes and qualification completion.
  • Assit in facilitating and co-ordinating relevant student events and academic workshops.
  • Become the key liason for TAO students with attendance issues and mis-conducts, focusing on retention and advocating on behalf of the student, for successful outcomes.
  • Attend key meetings within the Schools of Nursing, Health & Counselling and Social work to be across issues key to supporting student success.
  • Assist with cultural celebrations and events recognising Māori and Pasifika protocols.
  • Obtain and demonstrate sound knowledge of the Schools of Nursing, Health and Counselling and Social Work programmes.
  • Monitor and respond to [email protected] email box (student queries).
  • Maintain updated data bases and records of student progress.

  • A health related degree or similar, relevant to this position.
  • Previous mentoring or teaching experience.
  • Previous experience in the health workforce industry.
  • Passion to support Maaori and Pasifika student success
  • Full drivers licence
  • Confidence in Te Ao Māori and/or Pasifika world views an advantage
