This is a significant opportunity to be a technician within a new type of design education at New Zealand’s largest and best resourced University. The ideal candidate will be passionate about design, especially experimentation, rapid prototyping, making, and iterative practice. They will be working within a team of technicians and design academics to assist staff and students to produce a wide variety of projects.
This is a new programme offering a range of fabrication environments from traditional machinery to digital technologies and sensor environments. The candidate will have proven experience across a range of equipment and skills, including:
- Laser cutters
- CNC’s
- 3d printing and post-processing
- Water-jet cutters
- Drill presses
- Hand tools
- Model Making
- Soldering stations
- Electronics and Arduino coding
- Sewing machines and more!

This is a full-time, 37.5 hours per week, permanent role. The salary range for this role is $62,400 - $77,800 per annum, depending on experience and qualifications.
About you | He kōrero mōu
Our ideal candidate will be comfortable learning new tools and techniques quickly and efficiently (including related software) and have the keenness and confidence to share their knowledge with individuals and groups in the Design Programme community of students, researchers and industry partners.
Experience with 3d design software would be a distinct advantage e.g. Fusion 360, 3DS Max, Rhino3d, or SolidWorks, as the candidate would be expected to help staff and students solve design issues.
It’s an expectation that you stay up to date with relevant technologies and techniques to ensure the best possible solutions are made available to staff and students, while also having a solid background in traditional workshop practice. Health and safety is an essential part of the role, so a proactive attitude towards ensuring a safe environment vital.
Essential:
- Trade qualification in materials / woodworking or related industry e.g. cabinetmaking or boatbuilding; high school qualification or relevant experience
- First aid certificate must be gained and maintained at all times
Preferred:
- Tertiary qualification or trade qualification in a field relevant to the CAI Design Programme e.g. Product Design, Industrial Design, Architecture or Fine Arts
