We are seeking a person to join our team in a fixed term capacity to support our algal monitoring programme across our regional roto.
Te āhuatunga a te tūranga | About the role
The catchments of Rotorua are being preserved and protected for future generations while recognising and providing for the traditional relationship Te Arawa have with their ancestral lakes. This role will lead the annual summer monitoring of sites in the Te Arawa Lakes complex for cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms.
This is a full time, 6-month position located in Tauranga and would be required to work through the public summer holidays. The role will commence in mid-October 2025, to allow for training and finish at the end of May 2026. This position will involve at least one day per week driving to monitoring sites to collect samples, followed by laboratory work, identifying and counting cyanobacteria in the samples.
Ō pūmanawa | Your skills and experience
- Applicants should ideally hold or be studying towards a tertiary qualification in environmental sciences or related discipline.
- You will also have experience in microscope work, and ideally be knowledgeable about the identification of lake cyanobacteria.
- You will have strong communication skills and be able to translate science into understandable content to stakeholders.
- You will also be conversant with MS Excel.
- Hold a full drivers licence.
- Ideally have some working knowledge of ‘R’.
- Be available to work through all the public holidays.
