The Department of Paediatrics and Child Health (Dunedin) has a long and proud tradition for teaching and research. Our department hosts a number of internationally-recognised experts in a wide range of fields, and hosts the New Zealand Child and Youth Epidemiology Service, the New Zealand Paediatric Surveillance Unit, and the National Mortality Review Data Group.
The role/Te mahi
We are seeking an Assistant Research Fellow to provide research and administrative support to the New Zealand Paediatric Surveillance Unit (NZPSU) and the Research Operations Committee of the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health.
This varied and rewarding role includes managing data collection and reporting functions under the NZPSU’s contract with the Ministry of Health, supporting surveillance research activities, and facilitating departmental research processes including postgraduate administration and ethics applications.
You will be responsible for liaising with clinicians, researchers, and national health agencies, coordinating meetings and communications, preparing data summaries, and contributing to the production of research reports. You will also play a key role in supporting departmental research oversight and reporting functions.
This is a unique opportunity to be part of a nationally significant public health initiative that supports paediatric research and health policy development in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Your skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako
The successful candidate will be highly organised, detail-oriented, and able to work collaboratively. In addition, the candidate is expected to have:
- A Bachelor's degree in health, science or related field (a postgraduate qualification in Public Health or Epidemiology is desirable).
- Experience managing research data, including databases such as REDCap, Access or Excel.
- Strong organisational skills with attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
- Proven ability to work independently and meet deadlines across a broad portfolio of work.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to liaise effectively with clinicians and stakeholders.
- An understanding of research ethics, data confidentiality, and clinical or public health terminology.
- Commitment to upholding the University’s core values related to support and success of Māori and Pacific students, aligned with the University’s Māori Strategic Framework and Pacific Strategic Framework.

This is a permanent, full-time (1 FTE), position based in Ōtepoti, Dunedin.
The salary range for Assistant Research Fellow $62,496 to $84,125 per annum.
