About the Role
If you want to be part of a small, supportive and happy team of 6 Consultants and a Medical Officer that works well together, then you have to consider Taranaki as your next place to live and work. This position will suit a newly qualified or experienced Consultant.
The Consultants main duties will include:
- Theatre sessions
- Outpatients gynaecology session
- Ward rounds
- Labour ward rounds that include teaching tutorials, audit activity and supervision
- Secondary maternity/obstetric care including antenatal clinics
- Colposcopy
- Participation on the on-call roster
- Clinical teaching of staff including clinical students

About the Team/Service/ Location
The team that works an on-call roster and are supported by a second Medical Officer, 4 Registrar’s and 4 House Officer’s. You will have responsibility for some in-patient and community clinics including outreach clinics and provided the opportunity for teaching and supervising junior medical, midwifery, nursing and allied health staff as well as students.
The maternity arm of our hospital comprises five birthing rooms, a pregnancy loss room, a birthing pool room and seven antenatal inpatient rooms, as well as 11 single bedded post-natal rooms. There is also a birthing unit in Hawera Hospital approximately 1 hour from the New Plymouth where there are up to 100 deliveries/year. Phase 2 of our new build due for completion in 2024 will include a completely new maternity unit with designated primary birthing rooms
Supporting services include a level 2.5 NNU with 8 cots, a paediatric ward, ICU/CCU, operating theatres and medical/surgical and older people’s health in our new modern wards and Theatres.
The department is accredited for O&G training by the R.A.N.Z.C.O.G. and hosts College appointed Registrars throughout the year. The service has well established links with tertiary centre’s for support

As a SMO in O&G, you will bring a wealth of clinical expertise, leadership skills, and a patient-focused approach to care. You will also demonstrate a commitment to professional development and support for junior colleagues.
- Experience in Obstetrics & Gynecology, with a proven ability to manage both low-risk and high-risk pregnancies
- Strong leadership skills and a passion for mentoring and developing junior staff
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team setting
