Deputy Commissioner of Police, New Zealand Police

New Zealand Government
Wellington, Wellington
Full time

We are seeking two experienced and highly credible leaders to serve as Deputy Commissioners of Police. These are statutory appointments under the Policing Act 2008 and represent a rare opportunity to help shape the future of policing in New Zealand.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police supports the Commissioner of Police to lead and manage the performance of the organisation, support good governance, and enhance public trust and confidence in New Zealand Police. These positions will oversee specific operational and strategic areas as assigned by the Commissioner of Police.

Law and order and ensuring the safety of New Zealanders are key Government priorities. Expectations have been set to enable Police to focus on core policing activities and increase visibility in communities. As a Deputy Commissioner of Police, you will work closely with the Commissioner of Police to lead a large, complex, and high-performing organisation. This includes responsibility to lift operational performance, and ensure the safety and wellbeing of communities and Police staff across the country. You will also play a pivotal role in support of the Government's focus on reducing violent crime and youth offending and enforcing the law.

This role requires a leader with exceptional integrity, judgement, and credibility. The successful candidate will possess strong ethical and personal leadership, with the ability to inspire confidence and trust across the organisation and with the public. We are looking for sworn Police officers that meet the requirement of a fit and proper person under the Policing Act 2008, who bring deep operational insight, a commitment to public service, and the ability to lead through complexity and change.

Police work in a dynamic environment where priorities, capabilities and resources are constantly evolving. As these changes occur, the responsibilities of the Deputy Commissioner will also adapt accordingly.
