We’re looking for a committed and detail-focused Environmental Technician to join our Quality team on a 6-month fixed term contract , starting immediately .

This is a critical role during a high-activity period as we bring our dryers back online, where you’ll play an essential part in maintaining our food safety and quality standards.

You’ll be responsible for executing Synlait’s Environmental Management Programme (EMP), Pest Control Programme and Water Use Plan. This role plays a key part in verifying the integrity of our processing environment and supporting our broader food safety and quality objectives. You’ll also contribute to daily hygiene reporting, trend monitoring, and communication of test results, ensuring the right information reaches the right people at the right time.

Key responsibilities of this role include…

  • Conducting environmental sampling as outlined in the EMP, including surfaces swabbing, powder collection, air sampling, and tanker surface swabbing.
  • Performing water sampling in line with the Water Use Plan.
  • Ensuring all samples are labelled, stored, and delivered to the appropriate laboratory under the required conditions and timeframes.
  • Supporting environmental breach investigations and contributing to internal and external audit readiness.
  • Completing daily hygiene chart reporting and trending of environmental and pest data.
  • Maintaining and calibrating sampling equipment and ordering consumables via SAP.
  • Communicating environmental results to area managers and supporting training or induction where required.
  • Collaborating with the in-house and external laboratories and building strong working relationships across the Manufacturing, Warehouse and Quality teams.
  • Performing pest control inspections, insect sighting and collection, and supporting mitigation through the Pest Control Programme.
  • Escalate pest breaches and assist with investigations alongisde pest service provider.

Skills and Experience

The ideal candidate will have the following skills and attributes:

  • Experience in environmental sampling, microbiology, or quality-related work in a food or dairy environment.
  • A relevant tertiary qualification in science, microbiology, food technology or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • Strong understanding of environmental monitoring requirements, sampling techniques, and pest control processes.
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong communication skills.
  • A proactive, team-focused attitude with a commitment to quality, safety and continuous improvement.
  • Immediate availability is essential.
