About the Role

General Medicine at Waikato hospital has a great opportunity for a motivated and dynamic physician who is looking to join a supportive and enthusiastic team.

We’re looking for a General Medicine Specialist who brings clinical excellence and compassionate leadership to a fast-paced hospital environment. You'll be central to helping improve patient flow through the Emergency Department (ED) and Acute Medical Unit (AMU), supporting decision-making to enhance care and reduce avoidable admissions.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead improvements in ED wait times and reduce length of stay in the AMU
  • Provide clinical input in ED and AMU
  • Support GP admission avoidance via direct communication and collaboration
  • Ensure our team operates efficiently, safely, and with a strong discharge focus
  • Maintain accountability as a consultant delivering high-quality, ethical medical care

The salary for this position will be based on experience and in line with the ASMS SECA agreement. Additional benefits include kiwisaver contributions (if eligible), shift allowances, professional development and wellness support.

About the Team/Service

You will be part of a large, dedicated team of physicians, registrars, clinical nurse specialists, allied health and administrative staff. You will be encouraged to be involved in teaching, continuing medical education and quality improvement.

There is emphasis on ongoing development of services to meet the needs of our patients. Our team is committed to customer focus, service development and working collaboratively.


About You

As an experienced General Medicine Specialist, you will have:

  • Knowledge and understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • Qualifications to practice as a specialist Internal Medicine Physician
  • Vocational registration in the Internal Medicine scope of practice with the Medical Council of New Zealand
  • A practising certificate with the Medical Council of New Zealand
  • A current full driver’s license
