Do you get inspired by the chance to make a tangible impact in a supportive, forward-thinking environment? Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury (UC) is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Information Security Officer - Operations to help shape and strengthen our digital future.

Āu Mahi | What You Will Do

In this role, you won't just direct from the sidelines — you'll be in the thick of it, combining strategic vision with hands-on execution to ensure UC's critical information assets remain protected, resilient, and future-ready.

You will :

  • Lead and execute daily security operations while working alongside your team on complex technical challenges
  • Drive technical excellence in security platform deployment, optimisation, and lifecycle management
  • Respond to and resolve incidents swiftly, leading from the front to minimise disruption and safeguard continuity
  • Collaborate across the University's diverse environment, navigating cloud, on-prem, and hybrid infrastructures
  • Balance strategic leadership with technical depth, influencing long-term cyber strategy while tackling day-to-day operational realities.

This is a highly interconnected role where the complexity of the environment will stretch your skills — from managing multiple stakeholder expectations to integrating emerging security technologies into a large, dynamic, and mission-driven organisation.

Mōu | Who You Are

You're a leader who enjoys getting involved — combining a strong technical background with a people-first approach. You bring:

  • 10+ years in IT/Digital roles (including at least 5 years in Security Operations)
  • Advanced, hands-on technical leadership experience in cyber/information security
  • Proven ability to operate in complex, multi-layered environments with diverse stakeholders

  • A collaborative, values-led leadership style that fosters high performance and inclusivity
  • Relevant qualifications and ideally certifications CISSP, Microsoft Certified: Cybersecurity Expert, CISM.

Here, you'll enjoy variety, the chance to influence both strategic and operational outcomes, and the opportunity to be part of a team where your contributions are noticed and valued.
