To be successful in this role, you will need to bring your well-developed relationship building skills to build strong networks with local Iwi, Marae, and community. Another key attribute that you will be sharing is your good communication skills, specifically in Te Reo M ori both verbally and written. Proven negotiation and advocacy skills at a senior level will be advantageous, as well as strong problem solving, and decision-making skills.

Mo te tunga | About the role

For this exciting role, working closely with Oranga Tamariki social Workers and Coordinators, the Kairaranga a-Wh nau will assist in identifying wh nau, hapu and iwi relationships for tamariki and rangatahi. You will also be developing and maintaining relationships with tangata whenua and other key members of cultural groups. You will also be providing support in building cultural capability by working in partnership with the Whang rei Site Manager and Site Leadership team. Another big part of your role will include convening and facilitating hui-a-wh nau, especially prior to Family Group Conferences.

  • Support tamariki and rangatahi to be well connected to their wh nau
  • Support social workers and co-ordinators to identify wh nau, hapu and iwi relationships for tamariki and wh nau
  • Organise and facilitate hui-a-wh nau, especially prior to Family Group Conferences
  • Assist tamariki, rangatahi and wh nau to be well prepared to participate in all wh nau decision making processes
  • Where appropriate, support wh nau to identify those within the wh nau who may be able to offer care to tamariki and rangatahi
  • Support cultural capability building within the site, in partnership with site manager practice leader and supervisors
  • Develop and maintain relationships with tangata whenua and key members of other cultural groups

Ng pumanawatanga ou | What you will bring

Key requirements of the role include:

  • A good understanding and knowledge of te reo me ona tikanga
  • Demonstrated relevant experience in similar role or background with established relationships and networks with local iwi, marae and community
  • Experience working with wh nau, hapu, iwi and other cultural groups, to gather knowledge of whakapapa
  • Excellent relationship management skills - able to establish, build and maintain effective working relationships at all levels of the Ministry, as well as with key stakeholders and networks
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas to a variety of audiences and build and maintain rapport with others
  • Strong problem resolution and decision-making skills - able to clearly identify problems, seek alternative solutions, identify risks and benefits, seek input from others and make sound decisions based on these considerations
  • Highly developed organisational skills - able to operate autonomously while gaining the co-operation of others
  • Ability to apply the principles of te Tiriti o Waitangi and the Oranga Tamariki Act 1989
  • A clean, current and full NZ driver's licence and a willingness to drive the Ministry's vehicles
  • Willingness to travel within New Zealand to fulfil the requirements of the role.
