Whanganui Prison provides opportunities for Tane under Corrections' management to learn and develop themselves through various avenues. An operational management role, critical to ensuring the education, rehabilitation, and reintegration needs of tane are being met through the appropriate interventions has come available - Learning and Interventions Delivery Manager. (Full time permanent position, Monday to Friday).

The Learning and Interventions Delivery Manager is responsible for managing the delivery of Corrections programmes, education, treatment, and other interventions to support the rehabilitative needs of prisoners across the site. Role accountabilities includes:

  • Provide leadership that values inclusion and diversity, safety, and wellbeing. Plan and lead positive and collaborative working relationships for delivery of education tutoring and support, volunteer activities, access to library resources, cross teams training deliverables, and the scheduling of service providers, addressing any risk, and/or practice issues.
  • Support the Deputy General Manager - Pathways and provide subject matter expertise. Contribute to the organisation's strategies, maintain the visibility of activities, commit to developing staff through building, and uplifting staff capability. Improve performance with a functional cross team's approach and foster a culture of continuous improvement to enable efficient processes to run. Ensure a smooth delivery and implementation pathway through the management of regulatory and planning processes required for the development and maintaining of the site wide annual schedule of programmes/training/activities.
  • Ensure the needs of the prisoners are met on-site by managing the delivery of planned education, training, programmes, and treatment, through co-ordinating services, and working collaboratively with service providers, staff, and managers of all levels.

The Pathway Forward (Te Ara Whakamua) sets the foundation towards planning and facilitating meaningful reintegrative pathways for the people under Corrections' management. The Learning and Interventions Delivery Manager is responsible for delivering planned education, programmes, and treatment through co-ordinating across the prison site. The maintaining of appropriate academic records, programme delivery outcomes, will be among the many responsibilities required and undertaken by your direct reports. The rehabilitation and learning team members work within a culture of continuous improvement which requires the strong working relationships with internal staff, external education providers, key stakeholders, and relevant others.

We are looking for someone with proven leadership and relationship skills, a high degree of integrity, resilience, and the willingness to get in and support the team deliver outcomes with individuals under the management of Corrections. Someone who will do the right thing and make the hard calls when required.

You will be required to be providing ongoing staff support, coaching, and mentoring, with enthusiasm, amidst a multifaceted prison environment. This involves creating an inclusive, positive environment that fosters rehabilitation, life skills training, and self-empowerment for learners, leading to increased motivation, self-worth, and independence. A key focus within this team includes activities that build confidence, a supportive atmosphere for social and emotional growth, the acquisition of practical skills for daily living and achieving personal goals.

As a collaborative and inclusive Leader, you will need to be able to demonstrate strong communication and relationship management skills, including a demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with stakeholders (both internal and external).

You will be required to have knowledge of, and hands on experience within the education/learning space, and be able to contribute to culture change, and build capability, along with the following:

  • Strong people leadership and engagement skills that will bring others on our journey, through thinking conceptually, making connections between strategy, policies and operational service delivery.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate an effective team to share a common vision, purpose, and to achieve strategic and operational goals.
  • Sound knowledge of prison management practices and risks including operational, financial (managing a budget) and human resources.
  • Highly motivated to enable skill enhancement and qualification attainment for tane towards their pathway and obtainment of employment post release.
  • Demonstrated ability to respond with resilience, and work through conflict in a professional manner, remaining focussed on strategic goals, managing fluctuating pressures and priorities.
  • Courage and determination to succeed in a challenging and complex environment.
  • Develop and drive strategic plans for delivering outcomes.
  • Experience in contributing to strategic planning and implementation.

Nga painga | The benefits

This position is covered by a collective agreement which is based on a range of 6 remuneration steps, the current salary band of $111,00 to 129,094. Appointment and remuneration will reflect skills and experience relevant to the role.
