We are Te Whatu Ora-Auckland. We are part of Te Whatu Ora – Health New Zealand, the overarching organisation for New Zealand’s national health service. We provide health and disability services to more than half a million people living in central Auckland, regional services for Northland and greater Auckland, and specialist national services for the whole of New Zealand. Our main sites are Auckland City Hospital, Greenlane Clinical Centre and Starship Children’s Hospital, located in central Auckland.

About the Role

We have an outstanding opportunity for a 12 month Advanced Paediatric Cardiology Trainee (Fellowship) position for January 2026 intake. The primary function of this role is the provision of clinical cardiac care for children (and on occasion adults) with congenital and acquired heart disease, at a trainee specialist (Fellow) level, to PCCS patients under the care of Te Toka Tumai at Starship Hospital. The Fellow will work with SMO and junior medical colleagues and the multidisciplinary team of nurses, technicians and other allied health staff, to ensure the delivery of optimal, evidence-based care for patients with cardiac disease.

The Fellow role will include care delivered to inpatients and outpatients and procedural duties (with appropriate supervision and training) including echocardiography and cardiac catheterisation. In this role you will work closely with a highly skilled and dedicated team of paediatric cardiologists, registrars and nursing staff managing a wide range of acute conditions with multidisciplinary input. You will have a high level of autonomy with supervised on call work. You will be actively involved in supervision of registrars and other unit activities. Clinical research will be strongly encouraged.

About the Team/Service/Location

The Greenlane Paediatric and Congenital Cardiac Service (PCCS) is a national service based at Starship Children's Hospital, Auckland. It is the sole provider of cardiology and cardiac surgical services for infants, children and adults with congenital and acquired heart disease for New Zealand and a number of Pacific Island nations.

The unit has a catchment population of four and a half million and we are performing over 400 heart operations per year of which 350 are bypasses. 20% of the procedures are performed in neonates and 15% are adult congenital operations. Current outcomes are excellent with overall 30 day mortality of close to 1% and neonatal mortality of 2-2.5% (including a Norwood program).
