Pou Whirinaki - Mental Health, Addiction and Intellectual Disability Services (MHAID) Māori Lead, Te Whatu Ora Southern

About the role

The Pou Whirinaki - Māori Lead will support capability building in the advancement of Te Tiriti o Waitangi dynamic work across MHAID, and on specific projects and structures that will have maximum impact on equity gains and positive health outcomes for whānau Māori.

Specific emphasis will be on achieving and maintaining the following key actions:

  • Interfacing of strategic relationships and roles between MHAID services, iwi Māori and the wider community
  • Providing advice on strategic direction and training obligations with respect to te iwi Māori and cultural/tikanga safety
  • Supporting Te Oranga Tonu Tanga and Te Korowai Hou Ora as Māori mental health and cultural teams within MHAID mental health services
  • Working collaboratively as part of the Directorate Leadership team for MHAID services to achieve improved outcomes

About you

Essential:

  • Fluency in te reo Māori
  • Knowledge and skill in the application of tikanga Māori and kawa
  • Commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the implementation of its principles
  • A clear understanding of, interest in, and commitment to Māori health services
  • Good knowledge of the Māori perspective of health
  • Knowledge, experience, and acceptance by tangata whenua
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and negotiation skills
  • Good interpersonal relationship skills, supported by excellent oral and written communication skills, including use of Microsoft Office
  • A qualification that demonstrates a lifelong commitment to learning

Desirable:

  • A good understanding of the New Zealand health sector
  • Skills and knowledge necessary for ongoing quality improvement
