The purpose of the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) group is to work in partnership with the rest of the organisation to provide digital technology and communication solutions that support excellence in policing and service delivery and enable Police's strategic ambitions.

With a primary hub in Wellington, and a presence throughout the country, we deliver new and enhanced solutions directly and through specialist vendor partnerships. We provide expert advice on how technology can be leveraged to support Police's strategies and turn concepts into reality through collaborative development.

The Practice Manager has overall responsibility for a Centre of Expertise, this includes any tools, standards, processes, and frameworks associated with the practice and the capability it provides to support the broader ICT Operating Model.

This role works collaboratively with Product Managers, and programmes and projects, to ensure that the practice has the resource capacity and capability to deliver on the product roadmaps. This role will ensure the ways of working in relation to the practice remain modern and fit for purpose and oversee the capability development of the community working in the practice.

The Practice Manager is responsible for ensuring that the team operates efficiently and effectively to deliver high-quality expertise and delivery capacity and capability to ICT.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Serve as the lead representative for your practice, ensuring capability meets the demands of product roadmaps and operational needs.
  • Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing team of subject matter experts.
  • Develop and implement strategies that keep our practice ahead of the curve in emerging technologies, particularly AI and automation in development pipelines.
  • Drive healthy collaboration with internal teams, product managers, and external partners to bring in specialist expertise when needed.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to streamline development processes and improve efficiency.
  • Oversee the hiring, training, and professional growth of your team, ensuring they have the skills, tools, and resources to deliver excellence.
  • Enable the design, adoption, and evolution of fit-for-purpose methodologies, tools, and approaches for DevOps and AI-enabled delivery.
  • Implement systems for evidence-based performance development conversations.
  • Ensure compliance with organisational policies, risk management standards, and quality assurance processes.
  • Build strong, trust-based relationships with stakeholders, ensuring the practice delivers measurable value and meets their needs.

To be successful in this role you will require the following:

  • Proven leadership experience in building and running a Centre of Expertise or equivalent technical practice.
  • Expertise in Agile, DevOps, automation, and AI-driven development approaches.
  • Technical knowledge of industry standards, emerging trends, and best practices.
  • The ability to translate complex technical information into clear, actionable insights for diverse audiences.
  • A track record of strategic thinking - setting long-term vision while delivering short-term wins.
  • Experience in managing relationships with vendors, partners, and cross-functional teams.
  • A collaborative, improvement-focused mindset - always looking for ways to optimise processes, tools, and outcomes.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with ability to collaborate across a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Tertiary qualification in Computer Science or related field or equivalent job-related experience
  • This role is based in the Wellington area. Some travel may be required.
