About the Role

Hon James Meager, Minister for the South Island, Minister for Hunting & Fishing, Minister for Youth, and Associate Minister of Transport, is seeking a motivated and professional administrator to join his team as a Private Secretary (Administration).

Based on-site at Parliament, you'll be part of a close-knit, trusted team supporting the Minister throughout the 54th Parliament. This is a dynamic, events-based role where no two days are the same.

Key Responsibilities

  • Be the welcoming face of the office by greeting visitors
  • Respond to queries via email and phone with professionalism and efficiency
  • Draft and manage Official Information Act (OIA) requests
  • Support the preparation of written and oral Parliamentary questions
  • Assist with Ministerial correspondence and stakeholder engagement
  • Support the Senior Private Secretary with managing the Minister's diary, travel arrangements, and daily schedule
  • Liaise with the Electorate office to keep the Minister informed of local developments
  • Log and track invitations, meeting requests, and hard-copy correspondence

Essential Skills:

  • Proven experience in administration, secretarial, or reception roles
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office and fast, accurate typing
  • Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
  • High level of resilience, maturity, and discretion

Desirable Attributes:

  • Interest or experience in Minister Meager's portfolios
  • Understanding of government processes, including OIAs and Parliamentary questions
  • A positive attitude and ability to foster a collegial team environment
  • A genuine passion for politics and public service

Salary & Conditions

  • Salary range: $71,767-$79,741 per annum
  • Starting salary will reflect relevant skills, experience, and internal parity
  • This is an events-based position aligned with the parliamentary term

Eligibility & Application

Applicants must be New Zealand Citizens or Permanent Residents and able to obtain and maintain a national security clearance at a confidential level or above.
