Mō te tīma/About our team

The Department of Surgery and Critical Care encompasses nine surgical subspecialties, anaesthesia, intensive care and emergency medicine. We deliver excellence in undergraduate and postgraduate medical teaching and internationally recognised research. The Department provides a range of surgical expertise and experiences for medical students undertaking the MB ChB programme. Our staff teach into the 4th, 5th and Trainee Intern years and provide clinical opportunities in General Surgery, Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine, ICU, Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology and Urology.

Te mahi/The role

The Department has an exciting opportunity for a part-time, fixed-term position as a Teaching Fellow or Professional Practice Fellow in Emergency Medicine. This role will focus on the new six-week Critical and Acute Care Trainee Intern module launching in November which will provide students more time in Emergency Medicine.

Key responsibilities include delivering tutorials, participating in student assessments, developing teaching materials, and teaching fourth and sixth year medical students placed in the Emergency Department.

Other key responsibilities in this role will include:
  • Participating in undergraduate level teaching and contributing to the continuing development of the programmes within the Department.
  • Contributing to the Departments’ academic goals by applying and sharing expert knowledge in a professional discipline or departmental and university service role.
  • Providing a key point of contact for academic queries from students, assisting with tutoring and pastoral care.

The successful candidate for this role will:
  • Hold, or be studying towards, a higher degree or tertiary teaching qualification.
  • Hold the Fellow of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (FACEM) qualification.
  • Have a proven teaching record and a passion for teaching.
  • Have effective communication and relationship management skills, with the ability to create a motivating environment for staff and students.
  • Provide evidence of an ability to work well with students and staff from differing academic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Be committed to upholding the University’s core values related to support and success of Māori and Pacific students, aligned with the University’s Māori Strategic Framework and Pacific Strategic Framework.

Pūroko/Further details

This is a part-time (0.2 FTE), fixed term position until December 2026, based in Ōtautahi, Christchurch.

The hours of work may be negotiable with the successful candidate. We are open to appointing either one candidate at 0.2 FTE or two candidates at 0.1 FTE each, depending on the preferred candidate(s).

You must have the right to live and work in New Zealand to apply for this position.

The successful candidate will be appointed to an appropriate step on the Teaching Fellow or Professional Practice Fellow scale based on qualifications, skills and experience. As a part-time position, the salary range for this role will be the pro-rata equivalent of the annual full-time salary range.
