About the Role

The Programme Director is responsible for leading multiple interrelated projects within a broader programme of work to ensure delivery on strategic outcomes and alignment with organisational goals. This role oversees the initiation, execution and benefit realisation of complex projects and programmes, ensuring optimal delivery performance, cost efficiency and quality assurance across delivery initiatives. Working closely with technical teams, stakeholders and leaders across Health New Zealand, the Programme Director ensures successful project delivery, customer satisfaction and alignment with strategic priorities. A key focus of the role is leading the transition from legacy systems to modern digital solutions, driving investment and delivery priorities, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement and equitable service delivery.

About the Team/Service/ Location

The Programme Director sits within the Digital Delivery function under the wider Digital Services group. Reporting into the Director Digital Delivery, this team is focused on achieving excellence in delivering results for the organisation by de-duplicating capabilities for strategic and major delivery while unifying all PMO functions within Digital Services. The team collaborates closely with Directors Digital for the regions, Digital Health Strategy and Design, Digital Applications and Products, and Digital Operations to facilitate nationally prioritised initiatives agreed with the organisation and its stakeholders. Through this collaborative approach, the team ensures delivery efforts are aligned, efficient, and focused on outcomes that support equitable and effective health services across Aotearoa.

About you

As an experienced programme leader or director, you'll excel at delivering large-scale technology programmes that align with organisational goals. You'll bring strengths in leading change, managing vendor relationships, and applying emerging technologies to drive innovation. Your clear communication and ability to build strong stakeholder relationships will enable effective collaboration, while your problem-solving skills will help navigate complex challenges. You will also have the following skills and experience to support your success in the role:

  • At least 5 years in a similar role, with proven ability to engage effectively with senior executives, technical teams, and external stakeholders to drive programme success.
  • Extensive strategic leadership experience with a proven track record in leading large-scale technology programs, including strategic planning, resource allocation, and risk management.
  • Demostarted program management experience in delivering complex technology initiatives on time, within budget, and to desired quality standards.
