About the Role

We are a team of talented and enthusiastic individuals looking for up to 1.0 FTE Rural Medicine Specialist to join us in providing emergency and inpatient care to the Taumarunui community. In this role you will work with varied presentations in our emergency department and on the inpatient ward providing a high degree of emergency and ongoing care in an independent manner.

  • Deliver proficient preventive, therapeutic and diagnostic interventions effectively.
  • Perform procedural skills, both diagnostic and therapeutic in a proficient manner.
  • Seek appropriate consultation from health professionals based at our tertiary hospital within the boundary of your expertise.
  • Develop rapport, trust and ethical therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
  • Accurately extract and synthesise relevant information from patients, families and other professionals.

  • Senior medical officers will be able to attend up to 2 weeks fully funded medical education and take 6 weeks annual leave as required
  • Taumarunui hospital sees approximately 10,000 presentations a year through its emergency department and has a 10 bed inpatient ward. We have on-site plain film radiology and laboratory services available during the day and on call 24 hours, 7 days a week. There is a primary care General Practice located on our site, operating independently of our hospital. Specialist outpatient clinics are provided by visiting specialists from tertiary provider Waikato hospital. There is a two bed primary birthing unit on site run by an employed charge midwife manager and midwives.

About Taumarunui

Taumarunui Hospital provides essential 24/7 emergency services and supports high-acuity patients through air and road ambulance retrievals to Waikato Hospital for complex care. The hospital also offers a range of specialty outpatient clinics with senior visiting doctors, as well as general laboratory and radiology diagnostics. With a growing number of nurse-led services, Taumarunui Hospital follows the Taumarunui Integrated Health Care model, developed in collaboration with local community and primary health services to ensure coordinated and effective patient care.

About you

  • Eligibility for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand
  • Ideally a Fellow of the Division of Rural Hospital Medicine, or FACEM (or overseas equivalent) with a sound ability to manage ongoing care.
  • If you are not a fellow of Rural or Emergency Medicine but feel you have the experience and skills required from working in a similar environment please apply and we can discuss suitability.
  • Experience in, or passion for, providing quality care to our rural and disadvantaged communities.
