Join Auckland Council’s Regulatory Engineering team and play a key role in shaping Auckland’s development. We ensure public infrastructure is designed and built to standard by assessing engineering designs, monitoring construction, and managing around $150 million in new civil assets vested to Council each year. Our work spans private residential and commercial projects to large-scale subdivisions. In this fast-paced environment, we work closely with asset owners like Auckland Transport, Watercare, Healthy Waters, and Parks to support safe, efficient, and well-planned growth across the region.


He angitūtanga: The opportunity


Auckland Council’s Regulatory Engineering department has a permanent full - time opportunity for a Senior Traffic Engineer in the Auckland Central team.


As a Senior Traffic Engineer, you will be a trusted advisor providing expert technical guidance to planners, development engineers, compliance teams, and the public. You will be expected to:


  • Contribute to pre-application meetings, assess a wide range of engineering approval applications, and ensure recommendations align with key legislation such as the Resource Management Act, Building Act, and Council standards

  • Support knowledge-building across the team

  • Deliver traffic engineering training and help strengthen decision-making at all levels.

  • Conduct site inspections to ensure assets meet Council specifications and consent conditions, while also managing application workflows to support a seamless and collaborative approach

  • Represent traffic engineering views at Council and, when needed, Environment Court hearings

  • Stay across legislative and technical changes—interpreting and communicating their impact to ensure consistency, compliance, and high-quality outcomes across the team

He kōrero mōu: About you


  • Traffic Engineer with experience in the design, operation, or project management of subdivision and land development projects, particularly those involving transport assets.

  • Degree qualification in Civil Engineering (with traffic components)

  • Current New Zealand driver’s licence is essential

  • Hands-on expertise in SIDRA modelling, including signalised intersections and network analysis, along with a strong understanding of asset management and relevant legislation such as the Resource Management Act, Building Act, and Local Government Act

  • A solid grasp of technical standards and tools—including RTA guides, AUSTROADS, NZS4404, AS/NZS2890, NZTDB, and Auckland Transport’s Travel Demand Management Guidelines

  • Excellent report writing, communication, and negotiation skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

  • Leadership capability, diligence, and confidence in conducting site inspections and preparing engineering assessments will be key to succeeding in this role
