  • Excellent opportunity to develop your professional practice in Women’s Health Anaesthesia at Te Toka Tumai Auckland.
  • Full time/ Part time, 12-month Fixed term position available
Te whiwhinga mahi | The Opportunity

We have an exciting 12-month fixed term opportunity available at Te Toka Tumai to develop your skills in the speciality of Women’s Health Anaesthesia. This role is based in Auckland City Hospital and Greenlane Clinical Centre.

National Women’s Health (NWH) is part of Te Toka Tumai Auckland, providing care for around 6500 births annually. Labour epidurals feature in over 60% of births, and the caesarean section rate is around 40%. The unit has an established reputation in women’s health as a regional and national referral centre for maternal fetal medicine, as well as home to the largest gynaecological oncological cancer centre in New Zealand, providing a regional service to around 2.3 million people. We collaborate with our colleagues from the full range of medical and surgical specialities including cardiac, neurosurgery and interventional radiology. We also manage a specialist women’s health pain service for acute pain, antenatal pain and persistent pelvic pain, which includes specialist nurses, physiotherapists, psychologists and gynaecologists.

We are looking for a qualified Specialist Anaesthetist to join us, working alongside a friendly and collaborative team of anaesthetic specialists, fellows and registrars, who has a genuine interest in Women’s Health Anaesthesia. Whilst this position is full-time, we welcome applications for less than full time commitment.

Aside from elective and emergency work across the Women’s Health Department of Anaesthesia, you will also take part in acute pain rounds, high risk clinics as well as provision of on-call services; the role can be expanded to accommodate those with an interest in pain management. There will be plenty of opportunities to be involved in quality improvement, teaching and research.

You will be responsible to:

  • Maintain high standards of practice and patient care, including appropriate pre-operative and post-operative management
  • Ensuring the implementation of clear policies for communication and responsibility for patient care with junior staff
  • Maintenance of accurate records
  • Participation in teaching at both specialist training courses and ad-hoc education of Resident Medical Officers, medical students, technicians, nurses, midwives and any other staff as required
  • Keeps up to date with current trends and developments in anaesthesia and in the utilisation of technology
  • Regular review of clinical performance as part of maintenance of professional standards
  • Will be encouraged to carry out or assist with appropriate research to improve knowledge or standards of patient care
