Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora
Auckland, Auckland
Full time

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to building a health system that serves all New Zealanders.

About the Role

We are looking for Transplant Surgical Fellows (two positions) at Auckland City Hospital, which is home to both the New Zealand Liver Transplant Unit and the Auckland Renal Transplant Service.

The New Zealand Liver Transplant Unit undertakes 55-60 liver transplants annually of which around 20% are in children. Experience is available in the full range of transplant surgical procedures in both adults and children, including deceased and living donor liver transplantation, split liver transplantation, and surgery for complications of chronic liver disease including hepatocellular carcinoma and portal hypertension.

The Auckland Renal Transplant Service is the highest volume kidney transplant unit in New Zealand, and the only unit performing pancreas transplantation. A strong emphasis on living donor kidney transplantation has led to annual numbers of kidney transplants performed rising to around 140, with approximately 40% of these from live donors. Having joined the Australia-New Zealand Kidney exchange program in 2019, numbers are expected to increase in the future.

Fellows will gain excellent experience and training in multi-visceral organ procurement. Experience will also be obtained in assessing patients for transplant, peri-operative care, immunosuppression, anti-infective measures and long term aftercare.

There are two positions available and call will be shared. One Fellow will be assigned primarily to each of the liver and kidney transplant services. Assignment of roles will depend on the career goals and training requirements of the successful applicants, however some flexibility is expected to ensure service needs are met, and this also enables the Fellow to gain exposure to all aspects of intra-abdominal transplantation. Auckland City Hospital is a RACS (Royal Australasian College of Surgeons) accredited training centre for both kidney and liver transplantation.

The unit has an active research program, and attendance at national and international transplant meetings is encouraged and facilitated.

At the end of the one year training period, the fellow should be familiar with all aspects of abdominal organ transplantation. Candidates who apply for this fellowship will enjoy a program aimed at achieving realistic goals, based on the individuals pre-existing surgical skill set.

This role is based at Auckland City Hospital, however flexibility is required as this role covers both sites and you may be required to work at Greenlane Clinical Centre to meet the needs of the department.
