About the role | Ko te mahi nei
Our Learn to Swim programme teaches valuable life skills and our instructors are responsible for maximising customers aquatic learning experience. You'll gain a nationally recognised qualification to support your career, benefit from continuous on-the-job training to enhance your skills, and receive ongoing support from your leaders as you develop and grow your teaching craft. You will also:
- Deliver high-quality swim education programmes to customers.
- Follow lesson plans with individualised instruction and progressions to meet the needs of your students.
- Continuously assessing your students to see they are progressing in their current level and ready to progress to next level.
- This programme offers you the potential for growth and other opportunities within our Recreation, Sports & Events unit.
- Feel confident before leading your own classes - shadow experienced teachers and learn the skills you need to change the lives of your students.
We're currently hiring swim instructors for a range of shifts, including morning, after-school, and Saturday morning lessons. To be considered, you'll need to be available for at least three shifts per week.
- Weekday mornings: 8.30am - 1.30pm
- Weekday afternoons: 3.30pm - 6.00pm
- Saturday mornings: 8.00am - 12.05pm

About you | Ko Koe Tēnei
- Ideally, you'll have previous experience teaching, coaching, or coming from a swimming background however, full training is provided.
- You're a logical thinker and are always one step ahead.
- You are keen to learn and passionate about teaching people of all ages. Most importantly, you feel at home in the water and enjoy working with tamariki.
- Successful applicants must hold a current Comprehensive First Aid Certificate covering unit standards 6400, 6401 and 6402. This can be obtained before the commencement of employment, at your own cost.
Key parts of the process:
- Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an assessment centre. This is a group-style interview scheduled for Wednesday, 17th September, at 4:00pm at Taiora QEII.
- Successful applicants must hold an NZ Certificate in Aquatics (Swim and Water Safety Teacher) Level 3. If you do not currently have this qualification, you will be required to attend training and complete the Certificate within an agreed timeframe.
- Training dates will be scheduled with successful applicants. This two-day course is fully funded by Christchurch City Council; however, attendance is unpaid.
Parakiore Recreation and Sports Centre:

Parakiore was a Ngāi Tūāhuriri hero renowned for his resilience, determination and agility.

- Location: If you're applying for a position at Parakiore, you'll be based at 50 St Asaph Street, or another Council facility as required in the lead-up to opening. Some flexibility with the work schedule may be needed during this pre-opening period.
- Salary: $28.95 per hour, we pay the current NZ living wage!
