He angitūtanga: The opportunity

Auckland Council’s Environmental Evaluation and Monitoring Unit has a fantastic 12-month fixed term opportunity for a Water Quality Scientist to join the Water Quality team.

Our team is responsible for long-term monitoring and reporting on Auckland's aquatic environments including lakes, rivers and streams, coastal and marine areas, and groundwater.

Work with our other scientists and monitoring specialists to provide scientific leadership, data analyses and reporting for our water quality programmes. Help build an evidence base to support policy development and implementation, and review management interventions to improve the health of our waterbodies.

You will be expected to:

  • contribute to the design, delivery, management and review of environmental monitoring, evaluation and investigation programmes and maintain a high scientific and technical standard
  • analyse and evaluate datasets using appropriate statistical and data visualisation techniques and communicate results through technical publications and other media
  • provide scientific support to kaimahi responsible for field operations and data collection
  • develop strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders involved in the sustainable management of Auckland’s waterbodies

He kōrero mōu: About you

This role requires specific experience in delivering water quality science, ideally in a local government context.

We will be looking for specific experience with the key role requirements:

  • good technical writing skills and proven experience in communicating complex information to a variety of audiences
  • understanding of local government, particularly the statutory requirements associated with resource management
  • sound understanding of Te Tiriti o te Waitangi and Te Ao Māori and a recognition of the value of the use of tikanga at work

Having experience in working with continuous water quality data, event-based monitoring data or discrete monitoring data in freshwater or coastal environments is desirable.

We still encourage you to apply if you have some but not all these requirements.
