About the role | Ko te mahi nei

We're looking for a Waterways Ecologist to join us in a 14-month fixed term role. You will provide expert ecological advice and lead environmental monitoring programmes that support the Council's goals under the Christchurch District Plan and the Resource Management Act. You'll work across a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, contributing to waterway restoration projects, resource consent processes, and ecological policy development. Responsibilities include:

  • Managing surface water quality and ecology monitoring programmes.
  • Providing ecological advice for planning, policy development, and capital works.
  • Reviewing and contribute to resource consent applications and hearings.
  • Promoting ecological awareness through reports, presentations, and public engagement.
  • Collaborating with iwi, government agencies, universities, and community groups.

About you | Ko Koe Tēnei

At the Waterways Ecologist level you will bring:

  • A postgraduate degree in ecology and a minimum of 5 years' experience in environmental management.
  • Proven ability to lead research projects and collaborate with specialist organisations.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, including experience presenting ecological evidence at hearings.
  • Practical experience with ecological databases, GIS, and environmental monitoring technologies.
  • A current driver's licence.

  • More than 10 years working in ecology/environmental management with at least 5 years in similar role.
  • Proven experience in leading numerous ecological research projects, , using a range of appropriate experimental methods.
  • Demonstrated experience of achieving results through project management of complex projects.
  • Experience in problem solving, innovating new ways of doing things, and designing, reviewing and updating best practice in line with the latest science.

  • Hours of work - 37.5 - 40 hours per week
  • Position - Fixed term 14 months
  • Location - This position is primarily based at Te Hononga, Christchurch City Council Civic Offices - 53 Hereford Street
  • Salary - Starting salaries will be based on knowledge, skills and experience the successful candidate brings to the role, and relativities both, within the immediate team and in the broader organisation for the same or similar roles.The salary band for these positions are as follows:
    • Waterways Ecologist: $105,450 - $117,167 per annum based on a 40 hour week.
    • Principal Waterways Ecologist: $126,230 - $140,255
  • Closing Date - 7/09/2025
