He angitūtanga: The opportunity

We have multiple internship opportunities for students passionate about environmental monitoring and research. Join one of three teams within Auckland Council’s Environmental Evaluation and Monitoring Unit (EEMU).

Field Monitoring Roles - (Hydrology and Environmental Data Management Team & Water Quality Team)
Based in the Auckland City Centre, you’ll spend most of your week (3–4 days) in the field supporting hydrology, freshwater ecology, and water quality monitoring programmes. Your work will span the Auckland region, giving you access to a variety of unique landscapes, environments, and seascapes. You’ll also undertake office-based tasks, including data management and equipment maintenance.

Geospatial or Data Science Role - (Air, Land and Biodiversity Team)
This is a largely office-based role (40 hours/week), also based in the Auckland City Centre. You’ll contribute to a wide range of interdisciplinary projects such as ecosystem and habitat mapping, assessing climate change impacts on the coastal environment, and analysing the carbon sequestration potential of marine ecosystems.

All interns will have opportunities to collaborate and gain exposure to environmental programmes across the entire unit.

Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou: What we offer

Grow your skills and start your career. Our internship programme ensures you get to do real work that matters and learn from experts in your field. You'll engage in meaningful work, contributing to the development of Auckland as a world-class city.

We offer a supportive environment, with mentorship and networking opportunities. You’ll be part of our internship whānau and will be supported every step of the way by a team who want you to succeed, including a buddy, intern liaison, Careers Team, and the wider intern cohort.

This role offers you a brilliant summer job that is related to your degree and will give you valuable work experience to help propel your career in the future. You’ll have the opportunity to work across different environmental specialisations in the Environmental Evaluation and Monitoring Unit and gain first-hand experience of environmental monitoring and research.

He kōrero mōu: About you

You’re collaborative, self-motivated, and passionate about the environment. You enjoy analysing and managing data and understand the importance of turning data into actionable knowledge.

For the field roles, you enjoy working outdoors in all weather conditions and have a strong commitment to health and safety.

To be eligible, you must:

  • Be enrolled in a degree in environmental, biological, natural sciences, geospatial, data science, or a related field. Preference is given to students completing a BSc who intend to pursue PGDipSci, BSc (Hons), or MSc.
  • Hold a full, clean New Zealand driver’s license and be comfortable driving Utes.
  • A current First Aid certificate, Day Skipper, or water safety qualification is beneficial but not essential.

As part of your application, you’ll be asked to provide a short outline (up to 1000 characters) of your research interests and career aspirations.
