Position Description | ED Registrar

About the Team/Service/ Location

The Gisborne ED is home to a group of FACEM or vocationally registered emergency specialists working with urgent care doctors to treat a volume of about 25,000 patients per year, with a 25% admission rate. We have a substantial portion of high acuity medical patients, trauma, and paediatrics. Our experienced specialists have extensive teaching experience and provide solid support for our registrars, and there are ample procedural opportunities. We’re proud of the diversity of our community and our team.

Gisborne Hospital, a 110 bed acute care hospital which serves a wide geographical area, Tairāwhiti, extending up the East Cape of New Zealand, creating enormous scope and variety in the work available to an enthusiastic registrar. Providing healthcare to a population of 54,000, Health NZ Te Whatu Ora Tairāwhiti is well supported locally by comprehensive surgical services and has a full range of diagnostic facilities on site including a new MRI scanner and CT scanner. We have strong ties with our tertiary referral centre in Waikato.

About you

  • Suitable for Resident Medical Officers PGY3 or greater and ideally have completed at least a six month placement working in an Emergency Department at Senior House Officer or Registrar level.
  • Applicants must be registered, or eligible for registration, with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
  • You will need to be a NZ or Australian citizen or resident, or have an appropriate visa to be eligible to live and work in NZ. For more information on visa requirements please visit the Immigration NZ website
  • Competency with te ao Māori, tikanga, and te reo Māori or a commitment to starting your journey and taking ownership of your learning and growth
  • Experience in projects / initiatives which give effect to Te Tiriti principals and frameworks, and the application of Mātauranga Māori and Kaupapa Māori approaches, particularly as they apply in healthcare settings.
