Mo te turanga mahi | About the role
We are looking for an experienced Senior Policy Advisor in Maori land policy development to join the Adaptation Business Unit.
This is an exciting opportunity to work on a priority area of policy looking at the problem of how New Zealand will adapt to a changing climate.
You will be joining a collaborative, supportive and high performing team who has a lot of fun. This is an opportunity for you to play a key role to influence positive change to strengthen the resilience of tangata whenua, communities, businesses and places to climate change and natural hazards.
Key areas of responsibility include:
- Preparing policy and advice on design elements of the adaptation framework, including provisions for Maori land and Treaty impact analysis.
- Working across government to ensure robust advice and coherence with related legislative systems, including Te Ture Whenua Maori Act, resource management, Local Government Act, Public Works Act, Civil Defence and Emergency Management Act.

We are looking for the following skillsets:
- Expertise and experience in policy development of Maori land issues.
- Demonstrated capability in applying Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Te ao Maori perspectives into policy design.
- Strong background in providing advice on complex policy problems.
- Solid understanding of machinery of government, strong written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to liaise across work programmes and agencies to ensure appropriate advice and information is provided to decision makers.
- Ability to manage a varied workload with competing priorities.
- Adept at coaching and mentoring.
Whanuitanga Utu a-Tau | Salary range
Salary range for this role is $108,976 to $132,277 pa. Appointment within this range will be based on skills and experience.
