Taitara Mahi - Senior Engineer (Network & Systems)
Permanent Full-Time
We’re on the lookout for a highly skilled Senior Engineer with extensive networking and solid systems experience to join our IT Operations team. This role is approximately 70% advanced networking and 30% systems engineering, and will suit someone with strong expertise in designing, maintaining, and supporting enterprise-grade network environments.
You will be a senior technical leader, responsible for the reliability, performance, and security of Council’s critical network infrastructure, with a focus on high availability, connectivity, segmentation, remote access, and ongoing optimisation. You’ll also contribute to system-level tasks such as identity, server management, and backup solutions.
As a key member of our senior technical team, your focus will be:
- Designing, maintaining, and supporting complex switching, routing, and firewall environments
- Ensuring enterprise network performance, availability, security, and disaster recovery readinessSupporting core systems infrastructure and collaborating with the wider IT team
- Playing a key role in network upgrades, security hardening, and configuration best practices
- Providing high-level support and mentoring to the wider IT team
Ōu wheako – about you
We’re looking for someone with:
- Extensive experience in the IT industry, including strong hands-on network engineering
- Advanced networking skills across switching, routing, VLANs, firewalls, remote access, Wi-Fi, and enterprise WAN/LAN
- Experience with:
- Enterprise-grade firewall appliances (e.g. Fortinet, Cisco, Palo Alto)
- Layer 2/3 switches, network segmentation, QoS, and traffic shaping
- Remote access and VPN infrastructure
- A good working knowledge of:
- Windows Server environments, Active Directory, DNS/DHCP, GPOsVMware (ESXi, vSphere, vCenter)
- Microsoft 365 admin (Exchange Online/Hybrid, Azure AD)
- Backup and endpoint security solutions
- Excellent problem-solving skills, documentation habits, and team collaboration
- Familiarity with security frameworks and ITIL best practices
