About the Role
The Lead Service Designer plays a pivotal role in shaping the strategic direction of human-centred design within the Design practice. Operating at both leadership and delivery levels, this role integrates service design, design research, UX, UI, and content design to support the purpose and delivery of Digital Services. The Lead Service Designer is responsible for guiding and continuously improving how design supports the development of products and services that are centred on people, whānau, and communities. Working in close partnership with Product Owners and Architects, the role ensures that design principles are embedded in product and system development, and that evolving design practices meet the needs of clinicians, patients, and the wider healthcare ecosystem. Additionally, the role provides leadership across the Design practice, supporting practitioners to align with best practices and grow their design capability.
About the Team/Service/ Location
The Lead Service Designer role sits within the Group Manager Digital Design part of the wider Digital Health Strategy & Design team responsible for developing digital service roadmaps and adaptable solution designs. It plays a critical role of integrating strategic planning and architecture with innovative design thinking to ensure digital strategies and system architectures align closely with user-centred design principles. This integrated approach drives the creation of effective and impactful digital health solutions, contributing to improved healthcare outcomes and enhanced workforce experiences across Health New Zealand.
About you
You are a seasoned design leader with a strong track record in human-centred design across complex, large-scale environments. You'll bring deep experience in the health and government sectors and are committed to designing services that reflect the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. You'll have a collaborative mindset, are skilled at guiding multidisciplinary teams and aligning design outcomes with strategic objectives.You will also have the following skills and experience to support your success in the role:
- Demonstrated experience in giving effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi within service and product design.
- At least 10 years' experience in human-centred design or related disciplines across large, complex organisations in both public and private sectors.
- Extensive experience working in or with the health sector and government agencies.
- Proven ability to lead design strategy and practice across multidisciplinary teams.
