The Controls Performance team is a centre of excellence within the Risk division. The purpose of the team is to provide assurance to management over controls within BNZ. Specifically, the team is tasked is to test, assess and optimise controls with the bank and to provide insights to management on areas of strength and uplift opportunities. The team has a close working relationship with divisional risk partners (within the Risk division) and our customers (BNZ leaders who own or operate controls) right across the bank.
The team sits within the Risk division, which is responsible for setting BNZ's risk appetite, providing a foundation for effective risk management and promoting an effective risk culture across BNZ.

This is an Auckland based role. It is a hybrid role with three days in the office and two days where you can work flexibly.

We sat down with the Senior Manager, Controls Performance (who you would report to) and he told us the following about the role:
What are some day-to-day tasks the person in this role will complete?
- Controls Testing: Perform design and operating effectiveness testing of BNZ Technology internal controls to assess their effectiveness in mitigating enterprise risks and compliance obligations. Specifically, undertake allocated targeted control testing, evaluate results, and document findings including identifying internal control uplift opportunities.
- Provide Insights: identify common themes in control testing outcomes and discuss improvement opportunities with the Controls Performance team and wider stakeholders.
- Reporting and Stakeholder Management: Maintain close working relationships with Technology Divisional Risk Partners while providing timely TCT outcomes and guidance to help the Bank manage enterprise risks and controls. Communicate test results, findings, and recommendations to stakeholders, including Divisional Risk Partners and Senior Manager – Controls Performance.
What is the most exciting thing about this opportunity?
Providing controls testing assurance and expertise to colleagues, having an opportunity to learn about key processes across the bank- what they are and how they work, getting to work with a wide range of different colleagues across the bank every week and ultimately be part of a team that is focussed on safeguarding the bank's reputation.
What is the most challenging thing about this opportunity?
There will be lots to learn about risk management practices, assurance testing methodology, and forming new working relationships with lots of divisional risk partners and BNZ staff across the bank.

What attributes will this person display in order to be successful in this role?
- Technical knowledge across the Technology and Information & Cyber Security functions.
- Demonstrated experience in enterprise risk management and delivery of assurance reviews. A highly developed understanding of technology control frameworks and methodologies (e.g. COBIT and NIST).
- A sound understanding of risk and controls and their application to the business environment.
